Sunny Side Down tells you which seat in a vehicle will stay out of the sun on your journey. This policy explains exactly what the app does with your data. It is short because the app does very little.
There are no accounts and no servers of our own. We do not store your data, we cannot see it, and nothing you do in the app is linked to your identity. Your location is sent to two mapping providers purely to work out your route, and everything the app remembers stays on your phone.
Sunny Side Down is published by Soham Dixit, an individual developer based in the United Kingdom, who is the data controller for the purposes of the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
Location (approximate and precise). With your permission, the app reads your device's location for two purposes: to set the starting point of a trip, and — only if you tap "Follow me along" — to track your progress along the route while the app is open.
Location access is optional. If you decline it, or your device cannot provide it, you can type a starting point instead and the app works normally.
The app requests foreground location only. It cannot and does not access your location when it is closed or in the background.
To calculate a route and to search for places, the app sends coordinates and the place names you type to two third-party services:
These requests are sent only when you actively search for a place or request a route. All are encrypted in transit over HTTPS. We do not receive a copy of this data ourselves.
We rely on your consent, which you give by granting the location permission when the app asks. You can withdraw it at any time in your device settings, and the app will continue to work — you simply type a starting point instead. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything that happened before you withdrew it.
Where you type a place name to search, we process it because it is necessary to provide the feature you asked for: without sending the text to a geocoder there is no way to find the place.
The two services described above are based outside the UK:
We hold no agreement of our own governing these transfers beyond each provider's published terms, which are linked above. If you would prefer your location not to leave the UK or the EU, do not grant location access and do not use the app, as routing cannot work without contacting these services.
The app saves the following in its local storage on your device. It is never transmitted anywhere, and we have no way to read it:
We keep nothing. There is no server of ours for your data to sit on. Recent destinations, saved journeys and your driver-side preference stay on your device until you remove them in the app or uninstall it — uninstalling deletes all of it. You can revoke location access at any time in your device's system settings. What Mapbox and Komoot retain is governed by their own policies, linked above.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR and EU GDPR give you the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to how it is used, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent at any time.
In practice these rights are mostly self-service here, because we hold no data about you: uninstalling the app erases everything it has stored, and revoking the location permission stops any further collection. If you want to exercise a right against Mapbox or Komoot, contact them directly using the links above. You are welcome to write to us at the address below with any question, and we will help where we can.
If you believe your data has been mishandled, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) in the UK, or to your local supervisory authority in the EEA.
Sunny Side Down is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any data from children.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new "last updated" date.
